Transitions 2025-2026

Mrs Harper is the Year 2 teacher at Harlaxton CE Primary School. Below is some transition information informing you of a little bit about Year 2 before you begin. We are very friendly and hope to see you soon.

School Year 2025 - 2026

 Spring Term 2026

This term, we will investigate the essential question: Where could an adventure take you? We will research many explorers from around the world, including Matthew Henson, Robert Falcon Scott and Balto the dog. After learning and understanding the successes and what might have led to the failure, we will plan and complete an expedition around our local area. In teams, we will set off, with many obstacles and challenges along the way, but fighting for the team to place their flag at the summit first.

We filled the Piggy Bank

This term we can earn money in the piggy bank for a reward. The first time, we decided if we filled the jar with 50p, we would like to enjoy s'mores. They were so tasty and some of us had never tried them before! Next time the piggy bank is full, we can choose our next reward. We have several choices.

10p = 10 minutes extra play

50p = bring a teddy to school

£1.00 = craft session

Together we will make a democratic vote, using our British Values to decide whether we would prefer to cash out 10p or 50p for a reward or save up further.

English

We have been on a 'nighttime adventure'. We prepared ourselves and took our torches across the swamp, through the long, swishy grass fields, over a rickety old bridge joining snowy mountains before stopping in a cave to warm up. Shortly after that, we had to jump over a deep, fast-flowing river before finding a treasure chest. Inside was... GOLD! We had the best time on our adventure, and are now looking forward to writing up our recount in a diary.

Maths

We have been exploring money! We have looked at coins and notes. Did you know the highest value doesn't have to be the biggest in size? We made different amounts using coins and notes and even played shops. We calculated how much we spent but also remembered how much change we needed!

Science

We are exploring Animals including Humans this term. So far, we have named the main body parts whilst also discussing organs and their purpose. We have investigated our senses and explored different things we can see, smell, hear, taste and touch. We realised that we use multi-sense approach in day-to-day life.

Design Technology

We are having so much fun looking at mechanisms. We have explored flaps, levers and flanges. We will use these skills to help us create and make a vehicle. Shortly we will be exploring axels to work out how wheels turn...

Autumn Term 2025

Welcome to the Year 2 page. We have a busy term planned with some adventures to support us answer the question: What wonders lie in the Enchanted Woods? Please read the topic web below to find out all of the fun learning opportunities that we have planned.

English

We are looking at Poetry this term. Looking at riddles and the characters they describe. We saw some clues and we think we know who might have visited our class! It was the Gruffalo.

Maths

In Place Value we are exploring the total a number represents. We will use manipulatives (counters including Base 10) as well as drawings to show our representations.

Music

The children have been learning all about pitch for the past two weeks. They have spoken about high and low pitch looking at how that is different to loud and quiet volume. Year 2 have learnt a song about a cat, adding actions as we went along.

As we have a Forest School Trip planned this term, we will be taking a healthy sandwich to enjoy whilst we are there. First, we need to find out popular sandwich fillings before we decide which flavour to make.

Science

What is a plant? We will label and identify their parts as well as be able to explain their purpose and use. We will look around the village to find plants and see if we can name some common plants including trees.

Geography

We will explore maps, read maps using a key. From this, we will explore an 'enchanted woods' and show this in a birds-eye view map.

Art

Andy Goldsworthy is a well-known Artist who creates sculptures using natural materials. We will imitate this style and create a range of autumnal pictures and sculptures with materials we find.

Phonics
