Welcome to Year 5

Autumn 2026

Welcome back to Year 5! We hope you have all had a fantastic summer and are feeling refreshed, excited and ready for a brilliant year ahead. We cannot wait to hear all about your adventures and get started with our learning!

Our exciting topic this term is The Ancient Greeks, where we will discover what life was like in Ancient Greece, learn about their achievements and explore the influence they have had on the western world. We will also compare the geography of Ancient Greece with the UK. In Maths, we will develop our mastery of number, including place value up to 1,000,000, negative numbers and the four operations, as well as exploring fractions and using our reasoning skills to solve real-life problems. In English, we will write a Greek myth, a persuasive letter from Pandora to Zeus and a newspaper article based on Theseus and the Minotaur. In Science, we will explore Earth, the Moon and our solar system, while in Art and DT we will create Greek-inspired artwork and design our own Pandora’s Box. We also have lots more exciting learning to look forward to in RE, PSHE, Computing and Music!

A few reminders: PE is on Monday afternoon, but please make sure your PE kit stays in school all week. Homework will be given out on Fridays and needs to be returned by Thursday. Mrs Wicks will teach you Music, Computing and French on Wednesday mornings.

We are so excited for the year ahead and cannot wait to see everything you achieve. Let’s make Year 5 amazing!

British Values

Leader in Me

On a daily basis, the children try to demonstrate our core values within school. As we aim to practise them so often, they become good habits that we can use not only in school but also at home too.

  • Habit 1: Be Proactive (You’re in Charge)
  • Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind (Have a Plan)
  • Habit 3: Put First Things First (Work First, Then Play)
  • Habit 4: Think Win-Win (Everyone Can Win)
  • Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood(Listen Before You Talk)
  • Habit 6: Synergise (Together Is Better)
  • Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw (Balance Feels Best
